Summer 2022
Based on member feedback and other work we did this spring, we are excited to announce that we will be converting Truman’s Pond into an outdoor fitness space.
This new outdoor fitness space will have many benefits for MizzouRec members: It will offer more workout space. It will be open and available to members year-round. And it will offer new equipment, activities and fitness programs that can’t be found anywhere else in MizzouRec.
Among the new equipment we are planning for the new outdoor fitness space you’ll find squat racks, tires and weighted sleds as well as shade canopies to provide some protection from the weather. Explore our photo gallery below to see first looks at what the New Outdoor Fitness Space could look like.
Please stay tuned for more information as we continue to update you on important milestones in this journey!

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH TRUMAN’S POND?

WHY IS MIZZOUREC CREATING AN OUTDOOR FITNESS SPACE?
- The new outdoor fitness space can be used year-round, instead of the six months per year members could use the outdoor pool.
- An outdoor fitness space will allow for more members to access the space year-round.
- The outdoor fitness space follows national campus recreation trends and aligns with our goal to enhance the recreational experience.

The featured photos are renderings that provide a first look at what the New Outdoor Fitness could look like. We are still in the process of solidifying types of equipment and final recreational opportunities for the space. We will be seeking member feedback to make sure we incorporate what members want!
HOW WILL THIS CHANGE AFFECT SWIMMING OPPORTUNITIES AT MIZZOUREC?
Lap swimming will continue to be available in the indoor aquatic spaces. Truman’s Pond did not include a lap swimming area.

You will see enhancements and leisure activities taking place at both the Rothwell lawn area, adjacent to Rollins Street, and to the indoor Tiger Grotto aquatic space.

Spring 2022
Providing you with the best fitness and recreational experience is our top priority. That’s why this spring we sought your feedback on how best to utilize the Truman’s Pond space.
This spring, when we began annual maintenance to prepare Truman’s Pond for opening — we found more repairs were needed than anticipated. With this information, we decided to pause and take some time to get MizzouRec member feedback. We asked members — with the information that Truman’s Pond would be costly to repair — should we repair this space as an outdoor pool or explore other options?
From there, forums were held on the topic April 26 and 27. We invited student leaders and MizzouRec student employees to provide recommendations on whether to keep the outdoor pool or reimagine this space so that it can better serve you.
In these forums, members told us they wanted more workout space and more functional fitness equipment.
We examined the member feedback, cost estimates and how many people were using Truman’s Pond to decide on the future of the Truman’s Pond space.
