Always wondered what a facial is like? We asked zouLIFE esthetician Jayviona your questions for you… just in time for 15% off facials on Fridays during February (talk about a tongue twister!)
I already take good care of my skin. Is it still a good idea to get a facial?
It’s always a good idea to get a facial in my book. No one has perfect skin, and there’s always room for improvement.
I’ve never had one before. Which should I choose?
It’s important to know your skin care goals. Do you want to get rid of acne? Are you having lots of breakouts? Do you have fine lines and wrinkles? Do you want a more relaxing experience? Are you trying to get rid of scarring? Be clear about your goals with your esthetician so that she can help you choose what’s best for you. If you’re unsure, I’d start off with the basic zouLIFE facial.
As an esthetician, what do you look for when assessing how to treat someone’s skin?
I look for papules, pustules and broken capillaries, or lines close to your nose or eye area. You can get these lines from things like allergies or smoking. I check if the person has dehydrated skin, dry skin, wrinkles or acne scars. I always ask my clients questions, too. Where and when do they get oily after cleansing their skin? Do they use a moisturizer? These things help me decide how to treat them specifically.
Do I need to do anything before my facial?
Make sure to avoid exfoliating at least four days before your facial; you don’t want to over exfoliate the skin. The day of, do your normal routine so I can get a proper skin analysis. You can come in for the appointment with or without makeup– doesn’t matter. Just get ready to relax.
Am I going to breakout afterwards?
If you do breakout, it’s common. Your skin is just detoxifying. With a consistent routine and following up at home, the breakouts should subside.
I’ve heard there are different types of skin. What kinds are there, and how do I know which kind I have?
There are five different skin types.
To help determine which kind you have, I’ll ask you a series of questions. Then, I’ll cleanse your skin, and take a look underneath the magnifying lamp to determine which of the five types you are.
After my facial, how should I continue to maintain my clean skin?
Immediately after your facial, avoid makeup, don’t make a massage appointment and avoid the steam room, sauna and tanning. Long term, make sure to follow up with your skin care regimen recommended by your esthetician. Refrain from touching your face, and stay hydrated. Also, make sure to use sunscreen!
How often should I come back?
It varies for each person, depending on their goals and how problematic their skin is. For the average person, I recommend once a month, because it takes about a month for cell turn-over, or making new skin.
